Wireless Multimedia Forum Joins 3GPP2

(Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) April 20, 2001 At its quarterly Organizational Partners meeting this week, the five Partners of the Third Generation Partnership Project 2 (3GPP2) welcomed the Wireless Multimedia Forum (WMF) as the latest 3GPP2 Market Representation Partner (MRP) to the Project. The Wireless Multimedia Forum is an international, multi-vendor forum and gathering point for vendors developing products, services and information focused on the delivery of rich media content to an exploding number of mobile, wireless devices.

3GPP2, which has 77 member companies, is a collaborative Third Generation (3G) telecommunications specifications-setting project comprising North American and Asian interests. 3GPP2 specifications are transposed into standards of the organizational Partners in support of the International Telecommunication Union's International Mobile Telecommunications-2000 (IMT_2000) initiative.

The role of a Market Representation Partner in 3GPP2 is to offer collective market information to 3GPP2 and to bring into 3GPP2 a consensus view of market requirements (e.g., services, features and functionality) falling within the 3GPP2 scope.

In welcoming the WMF, Steve Dennett, Chair of the 3GPP2 Steering Committee and Director, Standards and Spectrum for Motorola Personal Communications Sector, said: "I am pleased that WMF has joined 3GPP2. Multimedia is truly an area of high interest. With the combined efforts of these organizations and the partnering of an industry forum such as WMF with a global specification group such as 3GPP2, the overall goals of the industry for wireless multimedia are within our reach."

"We are pleased to join forces with 3GPP2 as we continue to agree and build upon open, interoperable standards for wireless multimedia and 3G networks," said Nancy Moss, program director for the WMF. "Alignment is an important step toward the widespread use of wireless multimedia communication."

The Wireless Multimedia Forum is the third organization to join 3GPP2 as a Market Representation Partner and follows the CDMA Development Group (CDG) and the Mobile Wireless Internet Forum (MWIF).
